Why You Should Add Infrared Saunas Into Your Wellness Routine

It feels like every few months there is a new trendy wellness fad that is calling my name and I absolutely need to try it. I’ve honestly lost count of the number of things I’ve bought and tried in the name of wellness, but that’s a story for another day.

My boyfriend actually heard about infrared saunas before I did, so he gifted me a package of visits for my last birthday. I was interested but skeptical; the traditional sauna experience usually leaves me feeling sluggish and even lightheaded. I’ve never been a fan of going to the sauna at the gym – sharing a room with aggressively sweaty strangers is just not something I would call relaxing.

We visited Perspire Sauna Studio in Newport Beach and was quickly shown to our separate sauna room that had its own TV. We were able to close the door and disrobe, grabbing the complimentary towel the studio provided us, and even choose what show or music we wanted to stream while we got our sweat on.

“Our full-spectrum infrared saunas combine the beneficial infrared rays with the therapeutic beauty of visible light through color light therapy in every sauna session. By eliminating the sun’s troublesome, harmful UV rays we provide a safe, restorative sweat session that will leave you rejuvenated.”

The main difference between traditional saunas and infrared saunas is that traditional saunas heat up the air around you in order to induce sweat, whereas infrared saunas use infrared light to heat the body from within without heating up the air around you. Keeping the process strictly internal by using light that penetrates the skin more deeply allows for an increased release of toxins. So you can forget about the suffocating, dry feeling of traditional saunas when you choose infrared!

Perspire also utilizes Color Light Therapy in order to treat various diseases and ailments, so while we were in the sauna we were able to change the color based on what we wanted to treat. We were excited to see how our color choice affected our mood both during and after the sauna.

  • Red – The Great Energizer
  • Orange – The Wisdom Ray
  • Yellow – The Skin Rejuvenator
  • Green – The Universal Healer
  • Blue – The Cool Soother
  • Purple – The Mind Easer

After our first session, we felt insanely relaxed and rejuvenated. Our sore muscles felt looser, the tension we held in our body had been released, and we slept like babies that night. I loved that I got to record the almost 400 calories I burned in my fit journal even though it was technically an “off” day, workout-wise. Who doesn’t love losing weight while doing absolutely nothing but sweating? Another benefit I’ve seen over time is that my skin has become clearer as a result of all the toxins leaving my body every week. It’s almost as if I’m scheduling a facial every weekend!

The sauna has become our weekly ritual. We both workout pretty heavily throughout the week, so it’s the perfect way to stretch & relax our muscles every weekend. We’ve added it into our weekend errands and we use it as a time to share tidbits of our weeks with each other we may have forgotten when we were in the thick of it. Sometimes, we choose to stream Schitt’s Creek or How I Met Your Mother. Other times, we put on a meditation playlist and just completely zone out. It’s our weekly escape where we can lean into whatever mood we are feeling. We’ve even scheduled separate solo rooms!

Infrared saunas have been my secret ingredient in my successful wellness recipe for almost a year now and I couldn’t imagine my routine without it. Have you booked your sweat sesh yet? Let me know down in the comments when you do!
